A Group Show at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art

Most of us do our share of following directions on a daily basis; the ones that are established by society, culture and authorities in our lives. I was interested in this project because being raised in an Asian culture, I spent my life breaking, inventing and yes, following directions.

The process of working on this series has proven to be as ambivalent as living an artist’s life. I constantly landed on the path to break or reinterpret the rules. The most difficult obstacle was that angular shapes rarely appear in my art because they symbolize confinement and constraint to me. I sought to bring as many rounded corners and shapes as I could into each shape in order to stay true while creating.

Some directions contain issues I don’t usually share or express in my art. This is a challenge as to how much and in which way I would share with viewers. In some degree, I was forced to create another self in order to feel safe creating behind that alter-ego. However, in essence, I am still the author. This project is the reflection of me with many facets expressing different concerns and struggles, yet they all represent parts of me. I finally learned that I can not run away from who I am.
