
1) You have been selected to participate in a one-year project that will be shown in August 2009 with Jeffrey Crussell at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (OCCCA).
2) Your work will be exhibited along with 15 other artists who will also interpret Directions to create a final artwork.
3) Your work is due in four intervals with the final components due by June 1, 2009.
4) A catalog will be created of all submitted artwork to accompany the exhibition. The catalog will illustrate all of the final pieces of art plus these Directions.
5) You will not know who the other participants are in this exhibition and are requested not to discuss this project with anyone.
6) It is your responsibility to read and interpret this material to create your final piece.
7) No questions will be answered or further explanation given outside this packet of Directions. Any required revisions to the Directions will be provided by email.
8) You are requested to sign an agreement stating that you will fulfill the Directions project and meet all required due dates. This agreement is located on the last page of this packet.
9) Complete the agreement and mail it to Jeffrey Crussell PO Box 2962, Orange, CA 92859. The agreement should be postmarked on or before July 15, 2008.
10) Part A must be postmarked no later than August 1, 2008, which will be a single sketch or layout depicting your final project’s configuration. This sketch should include notes and or descriptions of materials used, power requirements if needed and the method of installation. Put your name and date on the sketch or layout and mail it to Jeffrey Crussell PO Box 2962, Orange, CA 92859.
11) If your concept changes, resubmit an updated sketch or layout. Put your name and date on the new sketch or layout and mail it to Jeffrey Crussell PO Box 2962, Orange, CA 92859.
12) Part B will be due by December 1, 2008 and will include Shapes One, Two, Three and Four.
13) Part C will be due by March 1, 2009 and will include Shapes Five, Six and Seven.
14) Part D will be due by June 1, 2009 and will include Shapes Eight, Nine and Ten.
15) If you choose, this project can be completed sooner except for Shapes Three, Six and Seven, which need to be completed on certain dates. If you complete parts of the project early, turn in all completed pieces when done. Wrap the completed shapes in bubble wrap and place your “Name” and "Shape Number(s)” on the outside and hand deliver to Jeffrey Crussell.
16) Although the project is completed in four phases and 10 components, the completed work should have a cohesive appearance as if created together and appearing as one body of work.
17) Your available installation space is 6’ wide by 10’ tall on the wall or 10’ x 10’ x 10’ on the floor or hung from the ceiling. Please be certain that your work fits within these parameters. Floor and ceiling spaces are limited and will be granted to the artists that first submit Part A.
18) The following Directions will assist you in creating your final piece of art.
19) Create a one inch grid that is 25” x 25” on a single sheet of paper.
20) From left to right label the top of each line A, B, C, D, E, etc.
21) From top to bottom label the side of each line 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc.
22) Use tracing paper to create 10 overlays.
23) Use the overlays to create the following 10 Shapes by plotting the grid intersections like the children’s game “Battleship”.
24) Connect the dots in the given order.
25) Shape One: 1-A, 1-M, 13-M, 13-G, 19-G, and 19-A
26) Shape Two: 1-A, 1-M, 7-M, 7-G, 13-G, 13-M, 19-M, and 19-A
27) Shape Three: 1-A, 1-G, 7-G, and 7-A
28) Shape Four: 1-A, 1-G, 13-G, and 13-A
29) Shape Five: 1-A, 1-M, 13-M, and 13-A
30) Shape Six: 1-A, 1-M, 7-M, 7-G, 13-G, and 13-A
31) Shape Seven: 1-A, 1-G, 7-G, 7-M, 13-M, 13-G, 19-G, 19-M, 25-M, and 25-A
32) Shape Eight: 7-A, 7-G, 1-G, 1-M, 7-M, 7-S, 13-S, 13-M, 19-M, 19-G, 13-G, and 13-A
33) Shape Nine: 7-A, 7-G, 1-G, 1-M, 19-M, 19-G, 13-G, and 13-A
34) Shape Ten: 1-A, 1-M, 7-M, 7-S, 19-S, 19-M, 13-M, 13-G, 7-G, and 7-A
35) The 10 shapes can form a perfect 5:8 proportional rectangle in a horizontal or vertical direction.
36) Determine the method of developing your shapes.
37) Using the shapes and your chosen method incorporate the following guidelines for each shape.
38) Shape One: Make a self-portrait.
39) Shape Two: Use found objects collected near the corner of Hollywood Blvd and Highland Ave in Los Angeles, CA.
40) Shape Three: Go to the CNN.com home page on Thursday September 18, 2008 at 12:30pm and use the current “Breaking News” story. (This is the story box with the larger photo on the left, which is updated every hour)
41) Shape Four: Use a pliable material to mold or cast a body part.
42) Hand deliver the first set of completed Shapes to Jeffrey Crussell by the required date. Wrap the Shapes in bubble wrap and place your “Name” and "Part B” on the outside.
43) Shape Five: Use your favorite color and some form of new technology.
44) Shape Six: Describe a dream that you have the week of December 22, 2008.
45) Shape Seven: Document 20 or more people on January 24, 2009 at Garden Grove Park in Garden Grove, CA (This date might shift a day or two)
46) Hand deliver the second set of completed Shapes to Jeffrey Crussell by the required date. Wrap the Shapes in bubble wrap and place your “Name” and "Part C” on the outside.
47) Shape Eight: Use paint to illustrate an event in your current relationship.
48) Shape Nine: Use five pounds of found paper.
49) Shape Ten: Use 100 images found online.
50) Using Word write a 100-word statement about your piece. Burn a CD, write your name and project title on the disk and include it in the final package.
51) Using Word develop a price list for your piece. The prices can be for the overall ten Shapes as a group or a price for each individual Shape. Include this price list on your statement CD. If you are not a member of OCCCA there will be a 30% commission. If you are a member of OCCCA there will be no commission.
52) Hand deliver the last set of completed Shapes to Jeffrey Crussell by the required date. Wrap the Shapes, statement and price list CD in bubble wrap and place your “Name” and "Part D” on the outside.
53) Meet at 6pm Monday July 27, 2009 at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art to install your work. This date and time might shift depending on OCCCA’s de-install schedule from the current show.
54) Attend the opening on August 1, 2009 from 6-10pm at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art.
55) De-install your work on Sunday August 30, 2009 at 1:00pm.
